I wonder why there is even a try out in elementary school?
Why not let all the kids participate? I don't understand why written expression would have anything to do with robotics ability. My dyslexic/dyspraxic/dysgraphic son struggles endlessly with written work, but has off-the-charts spatial abilities. He has been able to work on the most difficult projects in his sister's robotics kit since he was four. I would raise holy hell if the school tried to keep him off the robotics team (if they had one). Our kids need an area where they can succeed and fit in if they are going to stay connected to school. So sorry you have to deal with this
