http://www.starfall.com/) has gotten good reviews from some parents I know. When we were in a similar situation, we found copies of the Cluefinders pretty cheaply, and my son liked them a lot. This (

Hopefully, this, in combination with the other excellent ideas given in this thread, will be enough to give you and your kiddo a more pleasant experience over the next few months.
