DS10 was struggling with math this spring. He’s 2e, was in an all gifted classroom, came from a Montessori school and hadn’t seen some of the material before. I looked at several options such as signing him up for a remedial math camp at a dyslexia school this summer, tutoring with a 2e specialists and a few other things.

I ended up going with the easiest and least expensive. He started meeting for an hour each week with a nice mom in our neighborhood who teaches at a different elementary school in our district. I knew her because my younger son is friends with her son.

It has been awesome. He really likes her, she “gets” him, and he has made so much progress. I gave permission for her to communicate with his teacher and she advocated for an amendment to his 504 and is using those accommodations with him this summer. He went from struggling to doing a preview of next year this summer and getting a jump on everything he’ll encounter in fifth grade math. Math has gone from impossible to doable with hard work. His attitude is so much better about it.

I just wanted to mention this because it was resource right under my nose and I might’ve overlooked it because it wasn’t specifically geared towards 2e or gifted.
