ODS has justed started reception at our British-style international school. Age-wise, it's a preK year in the US, but they start very heavy literacy for the kids immediately.

ODS reads chapter books at home with help (trading off pages); he's the only reader in his class.

On the first day, his teacher did a preliminary phonics check and put him on level two readers, very basic. After a day, I can't expect her to know exactly where he should be placed, and she did say he would probably move up quickly.

For those with older kids, can I just wait-and-see if he moves up? ODS has enjoyed the books he's gotten, so should I just let it be until I get signs of boredom? He reads plenty at home, so he'll get practice with real reading whatever he's doing at school. FWIW, we're just two days into the school year, and I'm honestly grateful they are at least reading with him!
