Has he done any practical experiments? We do a lot of kitchen chemistry and biology (see my post answering "What IS the goal?"). There are a lot of books on the subject.

I'm a scientist, and doing practical work is absolutely essential to understanding the sciences. If you can't find an online course, you may wish to substitute some kitchen- and garage-type stuff.
