Ideally, I'd like problems that are like puzzles, where he really has to think, which just so happen to require calculations, rather than word problems that are all about calculations. Since he's not being challenged in school, I'd like something that is challenging for him (i.e., appears at first glance to be hard, but not beyond his abilities), so that he learns how to approach problems that appear too difficult for him. (His refrain has always been - that's too hard, I can't do it - oh, that was easy. I'd like to get it to, wow, this looks tough. Let me see if I can do it.) I'm looking for attitude adjustment/confidence building as much as practice.
