I am in the Charlotte area so I do not know Winston Salem well. However, I think that in the more populated areas NC is decent for gifted education. Here is the link to the state NCLB rankings
http://www.ncschoolreportcards.com/src/I know this a few years off, but there is The North Carolina Academy of Science and Math, which a boarding school for 11th and 12th grade. It is very difficult to get into but it is a fantastic option not offered in many states.
