My 5yo's WPPSI results came back and his FSIQ was 129, GAI was 132. He only got 11 in the Picture Memory subtest (working memory) and the psychologist noted that he quickly grew bored during that test. His processing speed was 79%, which seems fine.

Should we rule out moderate giftedness at this point, or wait to do the WISC in several years? How important is working memory as an attribute?

Another interesting thing to note is that he got 17 in Information but only 11 in Similarities. I guess my updated question would be: are subtest scores of 11 for Picture Memory and Similarities a clear indicator of not being MG for sure?

I wouldn't sweat a point or two at this age. I think you can reasonably say he is somewhere in the ballpark of MG. Working memory is important (especially to math) but it's certainly not impossible to be functionally GT (even in math) with not-exceptional working memory. Happens pretty often, actually. And at this age, attention and motivation are fairly significant factors in working memory (and other) performance. The average Similarities score may or may not be meaningful. Again, he's young, and lots of other factors besides actual raw cognition affect performance.

Bottom line is, he's very young, so unless there are functional indicators that align with his specific test profile of strengths and weaknesses, I wouldn't invest too much energy in interpreting it. If one label or another is important for access to resources that other aspects of his presentation make clear are necessary, or if there are functional IRL concerns or problems that need to be teased out, that's a different scenario, and perhaps you wait a few years and re-test with the WISC. But he's a bright kiddo! I can't imagine one point was going to make you parent him differently. smile

Thanks aeh! It's just a bit frustrating because a particular gifted school (Bay Area) has a very strict 130 FSIQ cut off. DD8 got a 136 but because DS5 got a 129 it's unlikely we would pursue it now because I don't wanna have to do 2 school dropoffs:)

If the one point is of great importance for opening doors and providing placement opportunities, might it be worthwhile to contact the test administrator and inquire as to whether the IQ score would be expressed as a range or confidence interval, which would include the "130"?
