Well, it appears that for whatever reason they pulled DS6 out of the classroom (his normal homeroom) and the math specialist did some advanced math with him including what appears to be some long division work. Apparently she was impressed (her words) and after looking at the worksheet they were doing it actually looks like they were doing work that was new to him.

Now I'm cautiously optimistic... we'll see where it goes... We have no idea what has changed.

P.S. Anyone else have issues updating their profiles? My avatar is gone and I get an error when I try to fix it. Apparently this was specific to FireFox. I was able to us my IE browser to update my profile. Weird.

Oh, wouldn't it be great if they figured it all out and have solutions that will WORK for him!

Happy, happy hope!!! laugh

Maybe it has something to do with DW just ignoring math homework sent home and then sending in our math "challenge" sheets (from a 3rd grade book)? whistle Dunno.

It'd be nice if we found out that the GT teacher called the homeroom teacher to coordinate this. I'd love to hear that was the case.

That's great news JBDad! Kudos to you wife! I'm seen as being assertive with the school, but that's just bad-a$$!

I'd seriously be afraid to do that(not sure why! crazy) Good to know it was an effective strategy, I may try it.

Good for you. I too send two Singapore Math placement tests in last year wink BTW My son was taught long division too but that might have been a result of WJ-III smile

Well... originally we had the school sending home math "challenge" sheets for him in lieu of his normal math (which he still has to do doing the day with the rest of the class). The challenge sheets weren't very good in our opinion and they were completely disconnected with the curriculum. So when they ran out of challenge sheets, DW decided to give him sheets from the middle to end of a workbook we purchased a long time ago. I didn't know she was sending them in until recently. That may have prompted the change or possibly a call from the gifted teacher. Not sure. I hope it continues as DS6 has been very interesting in learning lately, focusing on math and we're back to human anatomy.

As a general update as I've been lurking for most of the last month or two... His reading is just amazing these days. They're doing a reading challenge. If you read a book or have a book read to you then it counts. (For his grade, if it's a chapter book, then 20 pages counts as "a book"). You get a reward if you get to 100 books by the end of the year. Needless to say that he'll be closing in on 500 books soon. We're running out of reading material! smile

At any rate, outside of school things are going pretty well. A lot of the behavioral issues aren't issues anymore. Some of that is probably due to his maturity and some of that is probably due to our strategies. For example since we have math homework sent ahead of time, he'll do all of the week's work on Sunday afternoon so that he's not rushing around so much during the week.

Great news JBDad! I'm so happy things are going better for your DS. And bravo to your DW - I'll have to remember her great strategy!
