DS, age 10, 5th grade is in a GT program and has been having a bad year. Teacher complains that he talks constantly, fidgets, doesn't pay attention, and that the quality of his writing is inconsistent. ADHD is certainly a possibility. But looking at his WISC-IV scores, I'm concerned that there might be other issues that need to be addressed (or that create behavioral issues that look like ADHD but aren't). Specifically, he has high verbal scores and low average scores on tests involving visual perception:

    Verbal Subtests
    Similarities 14 91st percentile
    Vocabulary 16 98th percentile
    Comprehension 15 95th percentile

    Perceptual Reasoning Subtests
    Block Design 12 75th percentile
    Picture Concepts 8 25th percentile
    Matrix Reasoning 10 50th percentile

    Processing Speed Subtests
    Symbol Search 8 25th percentile
    Coding 9 39th percentile

VIQ is 130, but processing speed is 91.

The school psych threw out the FIQ as invalid because of subtest scatter (good, or DS wouldn't have qualified for the GT program), but doesn't see the processing speed as a problem (she didn't even address the visual processing question).

Do these scores suggest visual processing issues we should address?

They might. I would certainly say they suggest something to be investigated, especially where the teacher is seeing classroom challenges. I would start from the visual perception/nonverbal disability/DCD/dysgraphia end of things, as well as ADHD/executive dysfunction. Where are his working memory scores? She must have done them, or there would be no FSIQ to throw out. Not unusual for NVLD and DCD kids to be mis-diagnosed as ADHD.

Thank you! What is DCD though? Working memory score is 110 (75th percentile)
