We have our first public-school Kindergarten Curriculum Night coming up. Does anyone have suggestions for questions that we should ask? Also, I just learned they start enrichment in Kindergarten based upon teacher recommendation and teachers are limited in the number of students they can recommend for testing. What is the best way to inquire about that?

    Thank you

Go and listen. Look up the school's motto and ask how each thing relates to the school's motto. Try and figure out what metaphors and topics make the Principle's heart go pitter-pat.

Remember that whatever they have put together has it's strengths and challenges, so you aren't there as a consultant - you are there to figure out what motivates these people. Assume that you won't be able to change the system, so concentrate on figuring out how to get your child's needs met 'in the flexible places.'

Listen to what the other parents are concerned with. When you advocate for your child, it will help to keep in mind what the pressures on the school are like.

Don't try and get your individual concerns in this group meeting. Maybe ask what the protocol is to get a meeting with the teacher and the Gifted Coordinator.

How has school been going so far?

Seconding what Grinity said about this evening being for the group and not so much for the individual. But hopefully there will be a sign up sheet for an individual conference, and if not you can at least request that!

Thanks much. Yes, this evening is about the curriculum and how things are done at the school. We have other time to discuss my child and that night is not the forum. So, I just want to be sure that I don't miss any general questions that I should ask that may be helpful in partnering and working with the school. So far DD loves and excited about learning new things.
