Yes! I was successful at putting it out of my mind until this week with the end of the month looming. Good luck to you too!

Yes! I'm waiting over here. It wasn't bothering me until today, but now I'm starting to get to the point where I really want to know!

Got a "need more info" email... just as I suspected. Sad.

Ok 'need more info' isn't as good as the thick envelope, but many many kids who got the 'need more' have eventually gotten in. Did they say what kind of info they needed? Will the new school folks help by documenting what they saw that convinsed him that he would be one in only 3 in their history to skip?

Grinity - that is a great idea re: the grade skip... They said, and I quote "Because L's achievement scores meet our criteria, we would greatly appreciate additional work samples tp supplement any portfolio items you already sent...... The committee is requesting at least 3 pieces of L's work that clearly demonstrates his advanced abilities...." and on and on.

SO hard to get that from a 5 year old.... I will have to take out the video camera and hide it in his room. Or wait until he turns 6 and have him take the WISC..... but if I do that, I will have to fully resubmit the application because they said the app remains open for 6 months.... and if i wait until he turns 6, that time period will have elapsed and I will have to start from scratch......

Lukemac, We had the same problems with coming up with portfolio items, so we just had the required testing done instead. I procrastinated forever while trying to get the items and finally said forget it and coughed up the money for the test. *sigh* Nan

Get that video camera out and start filming. Do you have an out of town relative who needs cheering up? That could be a good pretext.

    Yippee!

Lukemac- Grinity is totally right, just get out the camera! We sent a video of our then 5 year old playing Pokemon cards with dad and playing Monopoly, after the urging of people here. It doesn't have to be a complicated math worksheet. Most 5 year olds can't play complex board games and really can't do the math, or explain their rationale for why a water Pokemon has a better hit on a fire Pokemon or whatever crazy thing he was jabbering about!

Yes, sneak up on him with the video camera!

I don't know why, but it's so hard to get samples of work out of a kid who (if you didn't need samples) probably churns out a ream of paper a week on whatever his favorite topic is! At least, that's how it was with mine.

    Hi all...
I've been discouraged for a while to resubmit application for DYS program for my DD who is now 10 in 5th grade.
She's not in last year, but the family consultant encouraged us to submit all work samples again. I've been dragging my feet do it all over again because it's a long process of application.
But now I'm in the process of collecting all her portfolio and work samples plus DVD which I didn't do when I submitted my 1st application last year.
This school year has been great so far for my DD and her teachers willing to give me letter recommendations.
What do you guys think I should submit for DVD? She is well above grade level ability in writing. Should I record her while she is doing her writing?
Recently she won Gold Medal in Science Fair for her category Health Science among charter schools against Midwest states. Do you think it's a good idea to submit her science fair presentataion in the camera? She had to do presentation explanation her project..maybe I can do that??
    Any input greatly appreciated.

We're debating whether or not to apply for DYS, so I don't have any experience with the process, but I think a writing sample and a video of her explaining her science project would be useful. Perhaps rather than recording her writing, you could record her discussing her inspiration for her writing or the process she goes through?

Good for you for overcoming discouragement! All those ideas sound wonderful. Good Luck and remember that being 'near YSP' is very unusual in and of itself!
