Thank you Intparent for your information. Not sure what we will do. DD is also looking at the Duke programs...They sound more interesting by title, but that may not be true in reality. I really would like DD to be around some like minded kids.... but the fear of homesickness is deterring her from Think right now... and the idea of two college courses in three weeks. I will have to wait and see what happens. Maybe we should apply to hold the spot and if DD feels she wants to do it then go for it. I wish I had a magic wand and could see into the future and find out what is the best for her...I find myself still wondering...my kid can do two college courses? Or even my kid can take a college english class in 8th grade... So does having the scores indicate she can accomplish this goal? What does a kid look like who can do that amount of work and enjoy it? The idea of being able to really stretch her mind out to a more full capacity and the resulting exhilaration sounds wonderful....someone hit me over the head and tell me what to do!

Well... it doesn't have to be an "either/or" situation over the next few years. Your D could go to Duke this summer (if it is close to home), and plan to stretch herself at THINK the next summer. My D was 15 the first summer she went, and 16 the second summer. She is dismal that she has aged out, but we are okay with the fact that she didn't start until after 9th grade.

Alot of high schools kids out here take community college courses in the summer that count as AP courses or just to get college credit.

Intparent- yeah you are right about it not being an either or situation.. I do worry that she will not have a good time and then not want to try another program. Finding appropriate educational placements for her has been challenging.... I think I feel more trusting of a Davidson sponsored program than any other, mainly due to this board and the wonderful knowledge and compassion that is here.

jack'smom - DD took an English class at the local university this past semester and she did not enjoy being the youngest. I would really like for her to be around some peers around her age...

    thanks for you responses

Hi everyone - I posted this on the DITD Facebook page, but just wanted to put it here as well:

Still considering summer program options for your gifted students? The THINK Summer Institute is a three-week residential summer program on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno where students can earn six college credits through completion of two university courses. This summer, THINK will run from July 14 through Aug. 4. The application deadline of March 1 is less than two weeks away!

Also, for specific questions about THINK, feel free to email THINK@davidsongifted.org or call (775) 852-3483 ext. 6.
