My son is 8 and enjoys the challenges of timed tests. He is obviously gifted in math (his math ability is what is prompting me to have him tested), but I don't know enough about giftedness to know if he is also verbally gifted. He talks constantly (every idea in his head rapidly pours out of his mouth), but I haven't noticed an unusually advanced vocabulary or anything. He is a good reader, but he prefers fiction to non-fiction so he isn't a walking encyclopedia of facts or anything like that.
I just wish I knew what test to use for him! :0
It's certainly impossible to know and only having both would really answer the question of which is better. However, with an 8 yo, I'd do the WISC. All the really big scores I've seen on the SB5 have been with pretty young kids (5ish).
I think the WISC scores easier for verbal tests which might be a bonus. I'm not at all sure how math or math thinking gets represented on these tests (and maybe it doesn't as a separate thing). There are so many ways to have math ability as an 8 yo from great reasoning to great calculating to great ability to figure out the logic verbally. Some great math ability might show up as verbal precision and logic whereas other kids might do better at nonverbal tasks.
