kid is 3 1/2. he can't start k for 2 more years where we live due to age cut offs. but a few months back he started reading on his own. no instruction. doesn't go to preschool. about a month ago i gave into his cries for "work" and have been giving him leveled readers for kindergarteners. he blows through them barely pausing at words he doesn't know to sound them out. somehow he even knows sight words that can't be sounded out, or he asks me and i tell him one time and now those words are just words he knows. he reads in a voice that sounds like he is talking. he is just a natural reader. he is equally as smart when it comes to numbers. he can count and write pretty high (at least 50), and can do simple adding problems.

our district has a program where they will do a gifted screen and maybe let a child start a year early. but i'm not sure if i am wasting my time.

what do you think?

He sounds almost exactly like my just turned 4 year old. He can't start K for two more years either. I would LOVE it if we had a special screening like that. You are definitely not wasting your time.

Our cut off is Aug 1st with possibility of accepting up to Sept 1st and my DSs bday is Sept 8th. It is his fault, he was a week late! 8)
