My apologies for the double-post. I first added this to the end of a conversation where a couple of parents were contemplating re-testing kids, including one that would be going from the WISC to the SB5.

This article discusses the performance of gifted & highly gifted students on the SB5 in contrast to their performance on previous tests (the WISC-III in particular).

Any parent considering re-testing on the SB5 (especially after first testing with WISC) will want to read this. So will any parent who has already had a child take the SB5 in follow-up to a WISC and was a bit surprised by the outcome.

(Thanks to Dottie for the link to the full article.)

Gifted and Highly Gifted: How do they score on SB-5?

    A couple of pertinent snippets:
    Quote
In contrast to the means on the SB5, which seem to be lower than expected, many of the age-equivalent scores appear to be higher than one might expect. The proportion of children that received age-equivalent scores beyond the highest average score for mature adults (19% of gifted students and 40% of highly gifted students) seems implausible even after taking into account documented cautions in interpreting such scores (Sattler, 2001). If these age-equivalent scores are indicative of actual functioning, it seems curious that they are not accompanied by correspondingly high IQ scores. In sum, these scores appeared to be of minimal use in accurately describing levels of giftedness in our sample.

Another interesting finding is that some individual's scores varied dramatically between the two intelligence tests (as much as 35 points). Two students in the highly gifted program scored so low on the SB5 that they would not meet intelligence test criteria for giftedness even if the cut-off were lowered to 115. Alternatively, several students who scored at the low end of the IQ cut-off for our gifted program did very well on the SB5 and scored within the range of the study completed by Riverside on child prodigies.

Yes I know 2 boys who are leagues ahead of my DS and they scored only FS130 on the SBV. The one boy had 99.9s in achievement on WJIII almost across the board.

This is the primary reason we are considering taking our son to do the WISC. He took the SB5 at 5 years, 5 months and while he scored in the gifted range, it doesn't match the level of gifted we see at home or his achievement testing. His SBV5 scores left him on that DYS bubble where he's not quite qualified but seems to be in real life.

Does anyone else have info on comparisons between the two tests?

DS5 took the SB5 at 4 yrs 8 months and scored extremely high, but it does completely match what we are seeing. I have heard that it could be inflated by some, but didn't hear that from the psychologist. I have no other experiences with other IQ tests, just achievement tests, so not sure about that.

Re: inflated scores: Our experience is similar to shellymos's (though scores not quite so high!) - our DS5 scored high on the SB-V when he took it at age 4.1, then scored high on the WJIII too at age 5.

Our psychologist said that if DS took the test again around age 9, we could expect to see the scores drop about 5 points. I would guess that this would be true on all the IQ tests though, not just the SB-V, because there just aren't that many really young kids who can answer all the questions right, whereas once you get older there will be more kids who can answer all the questions right, thus the higher scores will be rarer in older kids. Any test gurus out there with a clarification?

We are in the same boat---DS6 score high on SB5 at age 4 years 9 months. We followed up with high achievement testing as well. We don't feel that his scores were inflated but I am so curious to see how he would score in the WISC-IV now that he is 6 almost 7.
