Hi all, just a quick update on our newest adventure. We've made it to Florida! We're staying in a vacation condo for about a month while we look for a permanent place to live as well as a school for DD. We've visited a couple of schools and one looks really good. Dr. Phillip's elementary. Of course, the problem with that one is that you have to live in the district to go there, they do not take transfers, and we're not sure we can afford to live there, but we're looking hard. We are obviously on a tight schedule, since school starts on the 24th. But talking to the guidance counselor there was very hopeful. She said that since we have a WISC IV score above their minimum level for entrance (which is a 130) into the gt program, DD would be automatically put into the GT class from the beginning and we'd do the legal paperwork as time permitted. smile So she wouldn't have to start in one class and move later. It is a full gt program with all day everyday instruction by a gt certified teacher! There would be about 20 kids in her 2nd grade class, and they would love to have her there too. So keep your fingers crossed that we find the "needle in the haystack" in terms of a place to live in the district. smirk

It has been an amazingly hectic few weeks, but I am boycotting my school work tonight to give myself some much needed "me" time, so I'll update what is happening.
We did not find the "needle in the hay stack" we were hoping for in the school district with the fulltime gt program and they would not waiver the in district residence requirement, so we started looking elsewhere. As was suggested by a few people, here and at my work, we looked out of Orange county, into Lake county. The elementary school nearest to us in that county has a full day gt program starting in grade 3, and a day a week pullout before that. They allowed an out of district registration, with the understanding that we would move in district as soon as we could. (Yeahoo - one more thing off our list) So, we enrolled DD6 in 2nd grade. When we told the secretary that she was 6 she started to write her name down in the 1st grade list, I quickly told her she was going into 2nd grade and she didn't believe me until I showed her last year's reoprt card from gr. 1. She then called someone from guidance to come down and talk to us. She was very very nice and DD wants her for her teacher! She was impressed with DD's WISC IV and WJ scores and is setting up a meeting with the county to get the scores officially accepted.
Last week we met DD's new teacher. She seems really nice, but kept saying "oh, wow" when I was explaining a bit about DD to her. The guidance woman said she would talk with the teacher and explain it all to her and help her figure out what to do with DD, so we'll see how that goes.
In the meanwhile, school has started, and so far it is not impressing me too much. I know it is early days yet, but they are still doing simple addition (4 + 12 = ______), and reading basic books. Her homework has been painful to get her to do because it is not interesting or challenging her. It took her almost 3 hours to do her work tonight when it should have taken her 20 mintues at the most. frown
I'm hoping to hear from guidance again soon about some accomodations. If we don't hear soon I think we'll have to call and ask for something more.
Oh, we did find a house in this school's district and will be moving there at the end of Sept. if things work out right. (Can't wait for that.) In the meanwhile we have are not even through the first week of school and she's already saying it is boring!!

And the vacation condo - I have to say "Oh, Wow"!

Glad to hear things are starting to fall in place for you!
And yes, the first 2-3 weeks are very boring, hopefully the pace will start to kick up soon.
