Given in another thread posters saw IQ scores w/in 2 pts on the WPPSI and SBV, it got me to thinking of anyone has had DC tested on both WISCIV and SBV? I realize if you did this, it's likely that the first testing situation wasn't optimal which totally skews the results but perhaps there is someone out there who retested?

For data purposes, I have a friend whose child tested on both the same week (same tester/test session). I don't want to get too specific, in case she finds her way onto this site, but here's the basic profile...

Child tested on the WISC-III at 6 or so, with a GT but not off the charts FSIQ. High was verbal, at 145 (very impressive!)

Child was tested on the WISC-IV and the SB-5 just shy of 8 (university program). Both full scores were only in the 120's, with the WISC-IV being the higher than the SB-5 by 4 points. High on the WISC-IV in VCI, in mid 130's and high on the SB-5 in Fluid Reasoning at the 99.9th mark.

The child is very smart, and easily in that gray HG+ area. Achievement scores suggest all three tests are an undestimate, and I concur.

That's interesting...I wonder if VCI on the WISC is actually testing the same thing as Fluid Reasoning on the SB-5...

We are considering testing with the WISC in the fall because DS took the SB-5 and fell just shy of DYS qualifying scores. Our tester suggested using the WISC because she believe it favors more verbal children, but he wasn't 6 at the time and would have had ceiling issues on the WPPSI. I'm not sure how he'll do with the timed portions of the WISC however. He loves a competition but often freaks if he's timed when alone.

FWIW Cathy, most of the HG+ profiles I see are strongest in fluid reasoning (which has both a verbal and a nonverbal component). "Vocabulary" on the SB-5 though lands under the "Knowledge" index.

CAMom...warn him that the opening subtest (Block Design) IS timed, but know for yourself that none of the VCI subtests are timed, and that counts for DYS scoring. Hopefully that first subtest won't freak him out. It opens with that because it's interactive, and helps build rapport, but if he's really sensitive there, you might ask about doing that subtest later in the testing (I don't know if they can or not).

Dottie- thanks for the advice. I think the Block Design actually wouldn't bother him. He freaks more over things like timed math and wants to check his answers but can't. He loves the timed test on Big Brain Academy... that's almost the same right :-)

FWIW (not much!), I was worried about the timed factor on the WISC for my slow-but-persistent DS8 (6yo at the time), but it didn't seem to faze him. And the PRI was his best, not even the untimed VCI.

?????

I could hear some of what was going on in the other room, and I know he did keep answering some questions after the tester had moved on to the next question. He was clearly still churning away on things after he was expected to be, but I don't think those were the timed questions.

The tester was skilled with GT kids, but I don't know how she handled these late responses in scoring. He hit the scores we needed for DYS, so I confess that I didn't worry too much about it... wink

Just to clarify what is timed on the WISC-IV, it's just Block Design (PRI), and the two PSI subtests, Coding and Symbol Search (and the optional Cancellation if used). And while Block Design is timed, the timed aspect doesn't affect younger kids as much as older ones. A young child can still get a really nice score there without hitting any bonuses.

My three are all very "teacher pleaser-ish", and would stop cold once the tester moved on, frown . It is extremely helpful to have a tester skilled with GT kids!

I have two kids with scores on SB-V and WISC-IV. We did it for requirements (one program we needed took only scores from the test we hadn't had yet), not because of any dissatisfaction with the first test.

Scores were overall quite similar, but there were some differences. It seemed easier to hit full ceilings on the WISC VCI than on the SB-V verbal tests. There is some test on the SB-V that is clearly not tested on the WISC as one kid did quite poorly on one subtest on the SB-V but had no similar score on the WISC. Finally, for one kid who is very, very fast and has a great memory, the WISC seemed to reward that more. There are memory tests on each, but he seemed to get more credit for memory and speed from the WISC.

Hello, This is my first post here. I'm usually a lurker, but I thought I have some data to share.

My DS8 was tested on the SB5 and the WISC IV (VCI only as supplemental) on the same day, by the same tester last June.
Here are the results...

SB5

FSIQ 139
Nonverval IQ 131
Verbal IQ 144
Abbreviated IQ 142

WISC IV
VCI 148

It is interesting to note that WISC IV VCI score (148) is higher than SB5 Verbal IQ(144) by 4 points!

Also, his highest index score on the SB5 is Fluid Reasoning.(141)
He is a mathy kid, so I thought he would score highest on Quantitative Reasoning Index.......

He was also tested on the WJ III on the same day.

WJ III Achievement

Total achievement 162
Broad Reading 143
Broad Math 173
Broad Written Lang 146

Since his Verbal scales (both on SB5 and WISC IV) are the highest, I thought Broad Reading score was higher...
I thought it is interesting...
