Hi, I was also wondering whether any of you used K12 and what your experiences were. I'm not currently planning on using it, but I've always wondered about it. I sort of like the idea of knowing that we're moving through curriculum in a linear fashion. Easy way out, but it would give me some comfort. We'd have to be independent users - no free virtual schools available in our district, and if we used it, it probabaly would not be for everything. Still, it's tempting (for me). Thanks!

A friend of mine used it. I can ask her what her final thoughts were. I recall that she really liked the art and music and science. She thought the math was OK but used her own math (Rightstart) instead.

K12 started in my state this school year as a charter school (virtual). They had such a great response that they had to use a lottery system for entrance. Using K12 next year is a resource to which I have given some serious consideration. Because it's a charter, it's tuition free and books and educational supplies are free.

I did some research on K-12 for a seminar I led a while back. It appears to be a pretty solid program, and parents have the ability to order each subject at the correct level for their child. If you're short on time for planning and gathering resources, it seems like a good option. The K-12 people were very helpful and responsive to my inquiries, so I imagine they would be happy to answer specific questions for you.

This is actually the problem, although I feel I'm short on time for teaching and am worried that I am short-changing DS. I'm working and he ends up working a lot of the time on his own, which I think isn't fair. It would save time if I didn't have to prepare. And there would be some projects and other hands-on fun stuff. Unfortunately, we're not making homemade cookies around here.

And it is the extras I'm most concerned about - art, music, history, social studies.

It might be useful for you then. Everything came in the box. Everything needed for music, art, science ... everything. They even sent paper clips and pencils. It was very pick up and go. It closely followed the Core Knowledge Series I believe.
