Does anyone have experience with an AoPS Academy? We are considering enrolling our 7 year old in the third grade math program at their Bellevue, WA location.

Hi, we are looking to enroll my 8-yr old son in the same location too. we had consultation and assessment the other day and the tutor sounded knowledgeable.

The Bellevue program is brand-new this fall, so you won't find anyone who can give you a review based on experience with this location. I have DS10 signed up for it, and I have high hopes for it. Like ss62, I had a favorable impression on the basis of a consultation during the summer. I was particularly impressed with the school head's ability to see exactly what DS was trying (right or wrong) and ask questions that allowed him to figure out the next steps on his own. (They hadn't hired a teacher yet for DS10's class at the time that I signed him up, but I got an email the other day that they have one now.)

When we lived in NC we went to the Raleigh area location. Our girls enjoyed the math and other classes they attended (debate and writing). I can only speak to our experience there, but we found the teachers kind and thoughtful.

I'm thinking of signing up my DS10 (rising 5th grader) at the Bellevue one too! Does anyone know if middle schools and high schools give credit for those classes? We're in SPS. I'm extremely daunted as middle school approaches....

This is precisely what I am talking about. DS is looking forward to the classes too.

For SPS, you don't need credit in middle school. Just fill out the partial homeschooling form to skip doing math in school if you so desire. HS is more complicated since you probably want to produce a transcript and satisfy the graduation requirements. PM if you want some more details about how either of these parts work.

I wanted to inquire if anyone has had their children participate in any of the classes at AoPS. It seems like they should have their first year under their belt and working on their second. Some of their classes are full for the Fall but I don't see much in way of review. Any insight on the school in Bellevue?

    Thanks,

My son did end up doing a class there last year--algebra 2. It was a good experience for him! He really liked the teacher (Dr. Ziskind). Everything ran smoothly. It was his first experience encountering challenge in math, but it ended up making him more confident, more willing to make mistakes, etc. He says he likes that they go into detail about proving things.

I don't know much about the AoPS Academy, but I would strongly recommend looking into the possibility of taking classes at UW as a non-matriculated student when your DC is older. The Applied Math department is much more lenient with regard to prerequisites than the regular Math department, however.
