My gifted 6 year old loves spelling and learning new words. Any good resource online, game , book for spellers ? We live in a small town and they are not spelling competitions opportunities until 4th, 5th grade frown . She is currently reading 4th grade level.
    Thanks

    Fun for her age...
    - Spelling City used to be a favorite... it has changed a bit.
    - Mensa for kids may be of interest... reading especially expands vocabulary.
    - The website of children's book author-illustrator Jan Brett has some engaging activities for kids who love words.

People can sign up to receive the Merriam-Webster word of the day.
As is the case with much of vocabulary expansion, be prepared to discuss adult concepts.

The movie Akeelah and the Bee came out in 2006... trailer on youtube here.

I wonder if she would like Letterpress. It's an online (IOS only) game that combines elements of Boggle, Scrabble, and territory/real estate strategy games. I came across the following description recently: "Imagine if Boggle and Chess birthed a brilliantly gifted child who’d been raised by Steve Jobs." It's meant for adults, by my 4 year old son adores it and has become an excellent speller due to playing it.

If you are looking for word lists, Scripps Spelling Bee used to have them online.
There is still a Get the Words web page, but the linked files are not found.

When this occurs, one can check the Way Back Machine, Internet Archive.

Using the Way Back Machine, I found several archived PDF files of word lists...
including study lists and lists of frequent, moderate, and infrequent words.
    Also many thumbnail images.

You can also sign up for the free or paid version of Scripps' Word Club:
    http://spellingbee.com/word-club
which gives access to spelling lists as well.

Merriam-Webster's partner site with Scripps, with study lists grouped by language of origin:
