    This is really interesting. I have my own ideas of what has caused this. But I am glad to see that this topic is getting some media time

    I also live in an midde/UMC suburb and I'm not surprised. The math instruction in our local high school is appalling ("Honors students can teach themselves;" the video teacher who taped his morning classes so he didn't have to lecture in the afternoon; etc.).
