Writing to recommend these books; intended for YA readers, they explore giftedness and OEs through the lens of a near-future protagonist who tries to hide his giftedness for years, only to be discovered and forced to go to a school for the gifted.

The author is a GATE teacher based in Denver.

The best part of the book is less the writing than the way it teaches gifted kids about their attributes, particularly OEs. For my 10yo it's been great - it's helped place this kid's strong emotional OE in context and provide tools to manage it. (Heartbreaking comment: "I finally understand what's wrong with me!" Poor kid - I keep trying to characterize OEs as like a superpower, with good and bad aspects, but right now this kid is only seeing the negative.)

It's been so helpful to my 10yo, both as reassurance (you are not alone, it's OK that this is part of who you are) and as a teaching tool (you *can* learn to manage this), that I wanted to share it with this group. Hope it is helpful for others as well.

Thanks! It looks good. I'd read it if it were available as a physical book rather than a Kindle one. smile

It appears to be available as a paperback, too!

Adding a link to this thread: Book recommendations: age 9-12, as the OP mentions a 10-year-old reader.
