I am looking to privately test my 6-year old son and I found a psychologist. He mentions that he would administer a Stanford Binet test. There are no learning disabilities / issues with my kid. Just want to get him tested to plan his education acceleration etc.

I am new to this field. Please let me know if this test is good enough to get the IQ scores. I read somewhere that this test is a bit outdated. Should I go for a different test? Basically, I request an insight into the + and - of this particular test.

    TIA.

Yes, it is good enough for IQ scores, yes, it is a bit outdated, maybe, on selecting a different test. It's a decent test, just a little old. If you just want information about overall ability, you will probably get enough information from it. If you will need it for access or advocacy purposes in the future, it's hard to say. It probably will be sufficient for that, but it will depend on the institution.

Thank you aeh...you are a great help always.
Our school district says they do not accept the scores from any private testing. They will consider only their own CoGAT testing for gifted programs.

I have a few other questions.
    1) When you say outdated, is the quality of the test going to affect the performance of my kid? I mean, will there be questions about things my kid has never seen or used.

    2) Do you think it is better to go for other tests like WISC-IV any day compared to SBT?

    3) My son is 6. Which test is the best for him? WPPSI-IV or WISC-IV or WISC-V?

    4) Should I also go for an achievement test like WIAT after this IQ testing is completed, to get a complete picture?

    Thanks a lot.

    1. Probably not. It's more a question of norm obsolescence, which tends to inflate scores slightly.

    2. I prefer to use tests that are current, such as the WISC-V, WPPSI-IV, or WJ-IV.

    3. Either the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V would be acceptable, though for a high-functioning child, the WISC would probably have a bit of an edge.

    4. Only if this has some value for you, such as in curricular planning, or if you suspect a learning difference. With the caveat that age/grade equivalents should not be used as the basis of placement decisions.
