Can anyone give any feedback on this school - good or bad. I searched the history and there were several comments from 2011 but nothing recent.

My child has been attending public school and while it has not been easy we have been successful in getting what we feel is adequate challenge.

Didn't want you to think no one read your post. I'm also in the area and have no more information than you do.

I've wondered that they have "for highly gifted students" in their description, but that isn't their qualifying criteria. I also haven't been able to get a feel for their classroom structure, acceleration, etc. from their website or any other source.

The qualifying criteria on their website say that a score of +3 SD on a IQ test qualifies students for admission, and that students with scores higher than 2SD are assessed to determine if they qualify. Sounds to me like they're looking for HG+ kids.

Given that this school doesn't charge tuition, I would suggest that you attend an open house. You'll get more information by visiting and from talking to parents of current students than you're likely to get here.

True, but it does depend on the number of entrants to their lottery in the HG+ range. It could be the intent, but may not be the effect.

Now that they've added a middle school, lunches, and bus service, we'll probably check out an open house this year.

p.s. they don't seem to have an open house until October

I know a few people whose children go there and are very happy.

When my daughter was entering K, she received a spot at Metrolina, as well as another charter school.

After touring both schools, I decided to go with the other school. I didn't think Metrolina was bad, just not the right fit for my DD. She has a passion for music and the arts, so we opted for a charter that has a whole-child philosophy (one of the Basic School charters in Charlotte), differentiated instruction, and integrates the arts into all aspects of the curriculum.

We just began our 2nd year at the other charter, and so far, we are very happy with our decision. The differentiated instruction was a crucial deciding factor for us, as well as the focus on the arts (but not solely focused on the arts).

If the accelerated, rigorous curriculum is extremely important to you, Metrolina seems to be a good fit. For us, we are happy with the differentiation provided at DD's school, and do enrichment at home to fill in the gaps.
