The cover of the latest issue of National Geographic magazine (February 2014) features "The New Science of the Brain" spanning pages 28-57.

The table of contents shows "Secrets of the Brain" by Carl Zimmer, photographs by Robert Clark. More info at the website of the National Geographic magazine ngm.com

A separate online article about the brain includes interactives showing areas of the brain activated by various stimulations, and basic information about brain damage such as stroke, Alzheimer's, and tumor. http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/health-and-human-body/human-body/brain-article/

With other recent threads on the gifted forums discussing the high value which colleges and universities may place on athletics, families involved with soccer, American football, and sports with similar risks of injury may be interested in a quick websearch which brings to light other NGM articles discussing the impact of concussion on the brain.

National Geographic magazine explains, describes, and illustrates in a way that makes research accessible and understandable to general audiences without prior knowledge or expertise in a subject.

Omg... concussion... my pet peeve. I don't think nearly enough people take it seriously.

Here's a great read on the subject:

    ...I highly recommend this book.

CCN, thank you for mentioning this book Concussions and Our Kids: America's Leading Expert on How to Protect Young Athletes and Keep Sports Safe (2012), by Dr. Robert Cantu and Mark Hyman

Update: Dr. Omalu made great sacrifices to raise awareness of the potential for brain damage to be caused by concussions.
..........The story of his discovery is told in the movie Concussion released in 2015.

Update: Concussion protection... to preserve brain function...
The Guardian Cap is the leading soft shell helmet cover engineered for impact reduction.
    ...
It brings a padded, soft-shell layer to the outside of the decades old hard-shell football helmet and reduces impact up to 33%. The Guardian Cap was created in 2010 to address the clear need to advance the standard football helmet, which has changed little since the 1960’s.
    ...
In 2023, The NFL expanded the mandate of Guardian Caps with expanded use that includes all practices preseason, regular season, and post season that include contact. They have also added Running Backs and Fullbacks to the list of positions mandated to wear Caps which now include: OL, DL, LB, TE, RB, FB.
Is your local school system following the example of the National Football League (NFL), in taking steps to protect athletes from concussion injury?
