Hi All! I am wondering what would be appropriate to thank the advocate how came with me to my son's IEP? I believe she is paid by the government for her work (I do not believe it is a volunteer) but I am thinking I should send her a thank you note and perhaps a small gift of some sort? Can I do that without being inappropriate?

Yes, a thank you note will definitely be appreciated, and a token gift (like child, or a small object made by your child) should probably be accepted. Or a note to her supervisor saying how good she was, which may end up doing more good than anything else.

I agree, a thank you letter, cc'd to her supervisor, is quite appropriate.
