Im not writing this in response to any particular post.

I have seen quite a few references to reading levels and am wondering how these levels are determined. Again, I completely believe that a first grader can read at a 10th grade level and certainly a gifted sixth grader could. However, to sound credible with teachers and administrators, we should recognize that grade equivalents on standardized tests represent how well an average student from that grade (ex. 10th) would do on the test designed for the lower grade (ex. 4th). It does not guarantee that the younger student (4th) would test at the 50 percentile (or higher) on a test designed for 10th graders although they very well may.

Please correct me if this is not the case. I certainly dont claim to be an expert.
