We got the results of the neuropsych. eval yesterday. I'm still recovering. Poor Mite. He's got quite the package to deal with in life.

1st....dyspraxia severe in hands, eyes and mouth.
2nd....sensorimotor dysfunction or sensory integration disorder
    3rd....ADHD, severe inattentive type (argh)
    4th....visual tracking in 1st percentile!!!
    5th....hyperreactivity and movement in hands
    6th....very high iq.

ugh. I don't even know where to begin to help the little guy. I just want to bundle back up in the over'the'shoulder'baby'holder and keep him with me all the time. I want to go back and start all over again.

The things is each of those disorders bear symptoms similar to the other and highly giftedness also bears those sensitivities.

We're starting meds tomorrow. I feel so sad to put him on meds (I take them and sometimes they make me sick). But, hopefully, with the ADHD under control we'll be able to deal with the other things.

I just hope the meds do control the ADHD.

On a good note, the neuropsychologist says his VCI is depressed and she will sponser him for YS application. I don't know if that will help, but it is worth the try. She feels his VCI is easily in the high to exceptional range.

well shoot. I can't tell if my post went through or not. If so, sorry for the repeat.

No, Trinity, the district refuses to recognizes the OT need. I'm doing OT it him myself using guidelines from a pediatrician friend of ours.
The district also doesn't understand that they dyspraxia is really "severe asynchronous development" of a highly gifted kid. They don't understand they CAN be a difference in this kid. The neuropsychologist (who is a gifted specialist) said his body, muscle control, vision, sensory perception and motor planning are very young, but that she expects it to come together for him. She says really its a good thing for him because his body still has the ability to mature. Most kids don't get intervention until after that ability window is closing.

We, btw, were in a tornado the other night. We are fine and our house only lost a window, but a little neighbor girl was killed and many homes in the neighborhood have had to be demolished. It is horrid. It has been a stressful week while we help our poor homeless neighbors. It is all so sad.

oh and. we've gotten a dvd diveintomath.com program for Mite. He LOVES it. So, we are pulling him out of math in school. He's progressing very quickly in it and we expect, if he keeps up this pace, he'll be doing Saxon 76 by Christmas. We are trying to find a similar program for writing. The district thinks they need to teach him how to write a sentence. They don't realize he ****KNOWS**** very well (better than most of the IEP team) how to write a sentence. The problem is by the time the beautifully created sentence makes it's way to his confused little hands, it falls apart. It is very frustrating for him.

So, we are hoping to do that at home, too. Then we'll have him in school for science, social studies, gym, art, music and because he wants to go. I think things will change as he realizes how quickly he learns and how many fun things there are to learn.

Oh Willa Gayle - My prayers are with you and your neighbors regarding the tornado!

I'm so glad Mite has found a math program that interest him. I've heard good things about CTY writing, so maybe you're only steps away from a good situation for him, in spite of the school. I still can't get over that they aren't giving OT at school - whatever I guess.

    Love and More Love,
    Trinity

    what is CTY writing, Trin?

thanks for the prayers. we just had two of the families who are without homes over for supper. bless their hearts they are so stressed and overwhelmed they don't even think to ask for help about things.

I still can't believe the school won't offer ot either. this district has one OT for 3 schools and 120 sped students. SIGH!!

CTY is John Hopkins talent development wing - they offer online classes like EPGY does.

Sorry to hear about the ADHD - but sounds like it is for real and maybe the medication will help. It would be so great for him to get that under control. I have heard of it providing wonderful results for kids who really need it.

Bottom line.... a good evaluation is worth so much. Too bad we don't all have good school systems who can really work with the results.

    Glad you survived the tornado...

Mite is on the lowest dose now and DH thinks it is making him more hyper. I don't think so. I think they just haven't found the right dose yet.

Mite seems sad these days. It is upsetting. I'm not sure what the root of it is...medication...peer problems (kid at school picking on him)....boredome...etc.
